CensusAPI Package
The censusapi package for R was created to easily retrieve data from any Census API.
Why Use This Package?
There are a few other packages dealing with the Census APIs, but so far they all specialize in only some of the available APIs (e.g. ACS, decennial). This package is dataset agnostic. It also includes functions using the dataset discovery service to return dataset metadata, geographies, and variables as data frames.
API Key Setup
To use the Census APIs, sign up for an API key, which will be sent to your provided email address. You’ll need that key to access the APIs and use this package.

Using the Package
The getCensus() function is the primary workhorse function of the package. It sends a query to the Census API and structures the results as a data table with appropriate meta-data. The function takes five required arguments and one optional:

Getting Data for All States with a Loop
For geographic units smaller than a county you must specify a state through the regionin= argument. If you want to build a dataset of the full US you will need to incrementally create one for each state, or do it all in a loop:
